Character Spotlight 6: Zero Gravity

This Smasher is quite the surprise for those who know them. They aren't fighting how they normally do, despite some new movements.

I mean, they don't even have the same power. But true fans would understand where this came from. And it isn't bad to look at. Not at all...

Who's that Smasher?

It's Zero Suit Samus!
No longer within her famed Varia Suit, Samus goes without for the first time in Smash history! Imagine the surprised expressions of those who didn't know her well enough.

My First Reaction
This update on Smash DOJO! was a complete shock to me. I myself have never played a Metroid game, and I only knew about Samus in general through the Melee tournament. I had no idea she was a girl!
It hit me like a Pitchfork in the butt.
I didn't know how exactly to react at first. Well, after the surprise anyway. I didn't know how her playing without the suit would work out.

But after taking her for a test run of myself, I found that they made her quite good in my opinion. I don't play as Samus often when compared to Wario or R.O.B., but I'm still glad with the final product.

Through Her Series
Now, because this post is about Samus in her Zero Suit, I'll try and talk about information when she's wearing that and not her suit (which will be in another post).

Now, in Metroid games, Samus might show her face at the end of the game if the player has completed it fast enough. But in Metroid: Zero Mission for GameBoy Advance has her played in her Zero Suit for the first time.
That's a lot to take in, but worth it.
Stranded on Zebes, Zero Suit Samus had to regain her Power Suit with only her emergency pistol for protection. It wasn't nearly as strong as her Arm Cannon, but the huntress had to make due with what she had.

In Super Smash Brothers
Zero Suit Samus is equipped with her Paralyzer gun instead of her more recognizable weapons, removing her famed firepower. But with her armor shed, she becomes much faster thanks to her training under the Chozo.
Quite the athlete, isn't she?
Samus' gun has been given a new function for the Brawl Tournament, and that's the Plasma Whip add-on. She has more of a close range offense with it, and even an offense at a distance. Especially because the Paralyzer's shots aren't that strong or far.

As a Character
Now, because I don't want to tell everything about Samus here, I'm going to split this part up. I'll explain about Samus in her games when I talk about her suited self in another post. For now, I'm going to talk about her relations with the other characters in Smash.
Because even Samus can socialize when she wants to.
As a Smasher, Zero Suit Samus got a lot of attention. Practically all the Newcomers (except Snake) were shocked that there was a woman inside that suit, and a beautiful one at that! Even the denser or forgetful ones from Melee (Bowser, Falco) were shocked with the rest. But the Original 12 knew that she was a girl since Melee.

Samus normally doesn't talk much to socialize and make friends. It took the whole first Smash Tournament for her to trust the other 11 Originals, but she only began to open up during the Melee Tourney. Granted, she was careful around some of the Newcomers in Melee, but she did open up.

Samus enjoys her time with Peach and Zelda (finally having other human girls to talk with) even if she gets annoyed sometimes by Peach's girly tastes. And what I mean by that is all the pink. She enjoys having talks with Zelda, and Peach makes some good cakes.
Girls need to stick together in male-dominated
places like the Smash Tournament.
She also spends time with Fox while they talk about spaceships. She likes to tease Falco sometimes too, but they're friends, even if they argue. She also spends most of her time with the Fire Emblem swordsmen, Link, Lucario, and of course, Pikachu.

But being a girl in the male-majority Smash tournament makes her open to romantic interactions at least sometimes. If anyone would dare to try and ask her out, it'd be 3 guys.

First, Snake. His Codec call on the huntress suggested that he feels an attraction to her. Second, Captain Falcon, for them being of the same profession and having known each other the longest. And third, Ike, for Ike admiring Samus' self-reliance and independence.
Samus isn't there to look for a boyfriend.
While Samus doesn't seek out there advances, I'm sure she likes someone. She just won't tell anyone, that's all...

Smash Bros 4 Changes?
I don't think any changes are needed for Zero Suit Samus. I feel that she was balanced very well that her play captures the "feel" of her character. But I do say that her tether grab could reach longer.
To give players more incentive to use it then, I suppose...
Now that I mentioned it, maybe increase her Plasma Whip reach. And Paralyzer range and damage output slightly.

Final Thoughts
She's a whole lot of woman
Zero Suit Samus may be counted as a Newcomer character, this IS still veteran Samus Aran. And because this is a result of her Zero Lazer Final Smash, Zero Suit Samus isn't going anywhere. This versatility between forms is part of the reason she is regarded as one of the Strongest in the Universe.

I again apologize for anyone who wanted all of Samus' info in one post, but I've been following an order on characters from the DOJO! and I want to keep it up so I'm organized.
She'll get her time again soon enough.
Feel free to Comment below if you have anything to say about Zero Suit Samus. I hope I didn't leave anything out...

Anyway, until next time! :D

  1. Samus Aran, showing off her beautiful face while wearing her Zero Suit - the outfit she wears while out on missions.

She looks as cool and calm as ever as she holds her gun in her right hand, ready to take on anything that comes her way. The Baby Metroid that plays an important role in the story is also included along with Samus. It's a figure that really brings out the atmosphere of the Metroid world for fans to enjoy!
